Dr. Margarita Torrente and David Mateo (PhD student) are working on the determination of the composition of the a microbiota in different types of dementia, including Alzheimer's disease or dementia in Parkinson's disease. The aim of the study is to propose therapeutic alternatives based on probiotics that favor the symptoms of these diseases.
The study, called DEM-BIOTA, is carried out in collaboration with the Hospital Verge de la Cinta in Tortosa, Santa Tecla de Tarragona and Institut Pere Mata in Reus and is funded by the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities. Research is now in the process of recruiting healthy patients aging between 60 and 85 years old, as well as people with dementia in the same age group.
